The Arab Blues - Darj Saba live by The Arab Blues

from Live for Syria by Sharq Ensemble / Huzam Ensemble / The Arab Blues

/

about

THE ARAB BLUES is a duo formed in Chicago mid 2019. This group, unlike the previous two ensembles, is electric and hybrid creating an amalgam of traditional Arab 'turath' and Chicago Blues. This recording is from October 2022 at Elastic Arts in Chicago.

Darj Saba is a piece performed frequently in 'waslaat' suites mostly in Syria, but also around the Arab world. Rami Gabriel creates a forceful rage of sound through his electrified oud and innovative technique. I bolster him with a combination of hand, feet and stick percussion. Although we had played this piece a few times, it finally gained its character & purpose when we performed it after the tanker blast in the harbor of Beirut in August 2020. Since then we have used this piece as an invocation, a type of raging prayer, after tragedies. The spirit of this song resounds of the pain felt after an earthquake.
