Zaman Zaman
Wa Kul Illi Kan

The future of folklore is that
there won't be any more
if no one cares about
what comes next or came before
all the crafty artifacts
made by the native folks
are only for tourists buying
last minute gifts at airports
clothes we used to wear in a
village wedding holiday
are considered old backwards
primitive and thrown away
cameras telephones
typewriters radios cash box
are seen as clutter garbage junk
needless trash toss
what about the book
written before the typewriter ?
what about the fires ignited
before the butane lighter ?
all the people tied together
with the rotary telephone
who used a large boat
to get home
dancing nationals using
steps of our ancestors
why are we afraid it makes us
look dumb to investors ?
signing locals country songs
older that any author
even mister anonymous still
had a mother and a father
decorative arts woven
painted carved by hand
musical arts brass woodwind
vocal drumming band
movement arts dancing to
keep connection to the land
poetry in a language
fewer choose to understand
should we let them expire
or find a way to reinvent ?
can we make something from
the past still relevant ?
can we keep the folk dance
interesting for young feet ?
should we give an aging
village song a modern beat ?
repurpose, recycle, resurrect
what would have been trash
take the cables clothes cameras
crayons and mix and mash
attach the lonely objects
separated by generations
then we will understand
how villages became nations
the future is assembled by
actions and objects of the past
folklore is the character core
to help those people last
todays society was
yesterday’s vision
today’s innovation is
tomorrow’s tradition
