about

This suite includes:
- Dulab Rast
- Taqsim Nay
- Muwashah Ya Shadi al-Han
- Muwashah Sihtu Wajdan
- Ya Amal iSham

HUZAM ENSEMBLE is my current group, based in Chicago. This recording is from our very first concert, which was a part of the annual Arab Dance Seminar, November 2021, at Links Hall Chicago. This event happened just weeks after the great Syrian singer Sabah Fakhri died, to whom we dedicated this seminar and concert.

The suite is propelled with an inspired & adventurous 'taqsim' improvisation on the Nay flute by Naeif Rafeh, who is originally from Homs Syria. His country sings through his instrument; he is both a virtuosic musician and a Syrian community icon in Chicago. We follow by performing two 'muswashahaat' poems and a folklore 'qad' song. Huzam does not have a designated singer, so we trade lead melodies on the instruments, and all sing the chorus in our very communal 'jalsa' style.
